December 2003
"I have heard many instructors respond to questions about what they think is the most important principle in Aikido, or what they think is the best thing about Aikido. One of my favorite people in Tokyo says, "The best thing about Aikido is the people you meet." I couldn't agree more. My closest friends are all Aikido practitioners. I believe that our friendships have grown over the years not just because of our mutual interest in Aikido techniques, but because of the underlying principles of respect and thoughtfulness inherent in Aikido training.."

"Train sincerely in Aikido and evil thoughts and deeds will naturally disappear. Daily training in Aikido allows your inner divinity to shine brighter and brighter. Do not concern yourself with the right and wrong of others. Do not be calculating or act unnaturally. Keep your heart set on Aikido, and do not criticize other teachers or traditions. Aikido embraces all and purifies everything."

Morihei Uyeshiba, The Founder of Aikido

"The Founder said that two things are very important in Aikido; unselfishness and eliminating desire. Unselfishness is not to give away your personal possesions, people do not want that, they can buy those things for themselves. You must give your heart, this is what Aikido is all about. You must come to class and train hard, not be selfish with your time, your energy, your concentration. You must do your best. This is being unselfish. Desiring rank, status, promotion, compliments, or wealth is not good. It is natural to want a black belt, and it is good to want one. But only desiring the rank will not get you there. If you are unselfish, train hard, then you will someday attain the rank."
